Interview with Mackenzie Flohr

This week’s interview is with Mackenzie Flohr, Mackenzie is the author of The Rite of Wands, a young adult fantasy series.  It is rare that you will not find her with her wand (but not the one with  Matt.Smith‘s signature – that one is on special display).

What was the most surprising thing you found out while researching/writing your latest book?

Honestly, it was discovering the multiple correlations between my series and actual events found in Ireland’s history!

Why did you choose this setting?

I have always associated Ireland with being magical, plus I have this strange fascination about swords during medieval times. So, it seemed like the perfect country and time period to use as a model for the land of Iverna.

What’s unique about your world?

Witches and warlocks are not born with their magical powers. They must successfully go through The Rite of Wands ceremony in order to gain them.

How real do you think the science is in your book?

Well, there are certain remedies and recipes that I have/will be using throughout the series that were once actually used by apothecaries. 😉

What did you include that you wish was real today?

The kingdom of Aracelly. I would love to see a telepathic dragon as a ruler!

Special bonus for getting this far into the interview:

Mackenzie  says that you should look for a special hardbound edition of The Rite of Wands featuring a bonus short story, and an audiobook, read by Jake Dudman, coming this November!
